JV score NA. league (13-2 overall) and sit in sec-'ond place. They'll take a crack at first-place DeWitt Tuesday when the undefeated Panthers (8-0, 15-0) visit Fowlerville. DeWitt won 85-67 in a Jan. 6 meeting between the schools.

The Panthers are ranked fourth in Class B. "We're thrilled to be playing DeWitt in a game that means this much," Fowlerville coach Ken Curtis said. "We're trying to get competitive in the league and I think you could say we're doing that" For Tuesday's game to keep its meaning, Fowlerville first had to avoid taking a nap against Williamston, a team that has won five games all year. But a first quarter that produced a frantic pace and strong inside play from Hornet forwards Craig Kleiver and Tim Cline let the Gladiators know a fierce battle was ahead. And the piercing whistle sound from 46 fouls and four technicals assured nobody was sleeping on this night 1 Both teams took the court with guns loaded as they combined to fire up 31 shots and 13 tries from 3-point land in the opening eight minutes.

Less than three minutes into the game, both teams had reached double digits in scoring. Williamston (3-5, 5-10) led 21-18 as Cline and Kleiver both scored eight points. But after the wild first quarter, Fowlerville's height advantage began to take its toll. At 6-f oot-5, Lewis held a five-inch advantage over four of the Hornet starters and three over the fifth starter, Sam Mills. Kleiver and Cline both eventually fouled out and Lewis scored 14 second half points to finish with 20.

The junior also grabbed 12 rebounds, six offensive. Cline led Williamston with 20 points and Kleiver was next with 14. With Lewis holding court down low, the Williamston defense sagged to the middle and that turned Feig loose. The senior guard scored his 24 points with a mix of outside shooting and one- on-one moves. He also sank 8-of-9 free throws.

"With Lewis producing inside that helps us get relaxed shooting from the outside," Feig said. "It's nice to have him down low." But the Hornets hung tough and while Fowlerville's scoring hit a four-minute skid, Williamston took a 42-41 lead with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter. It would be the Hornets last lead, however. Feig ended the Gladiator drought by knocking down a pair of free throws and quickly adding a 3-pointer pushing Fowlerville to 46-42 lead. After a Williamston Lewis converted an of fen-" Sive rebound and added a free throw.

Fowlerville took a 49-46 lead into the final quarter. Lewis opened the fourth quarter with another putback. Feig added pair of free throws and Doug Thomas four, giving Fowlerville a 57-46 lead. The Hornets got within 61-56, but no closer than five the rest of the way. Free throw shooting was pivotal in final quarter as the Gladiators hit 15-of-18 and Williamston struggled, making just 4-of 15.

Fred Hackett was the only other Gladiator hitting double figures with 10. Mills netted 13 points for Williamston. Feig, a 3-year varsity squad member, said his team is enjoying 'I its sudden dose of success. "We won like four games my sophomore year and last year we won 10 so this is a lot of fun," he said. "This year we've really put it together.

We've been playing together and we're more relaxed ev-ery time we step on the floor. FOWLERVILLE (78) Douglass 3 00 8. Hackett 4 1-3 10, Feig 7 8-9 24, LewisS 2-3 20. Scharmen 2 0-1 4. Thomas 0 4-5 4, Spencer 13-6 5.
