2B Monday, March 31, 1997 Lansing State Journal Databank Environmontal Notebook Here's a place for household wastes Getting ready for spring by putting away the snow blower or cleaning out the garage? You're sure to find leftover gasoline, a few cans containing a smidgen of paint thinner or a container of not-quite-enough rose dust for the new season. The Ingham County Health Department has some help for you. The department will accept waste gasoline and other household hazardous wastes, like paint, pesticides, aerosols, wood preservatives, asphalt and roofing tar, and cleaners, at a collection on Wednesday, April 16. The department asks you to transport the wastes in a leak-proof container. Not wanted: explosives, radioactive materials, batteries, latex paints or antifreeze.

The department won't accept hazardous wastes from businesses, farms or commercial establishes, but encourages farm and business operators to contact it for further information about disposal. Wastes will be accepted only by appointment and can be dropped off free of charge to all Ingham County residents. To make an appointment or find out more information, call the county Health Department's Bureau of Environmental Health at 887-4312. Do you have an item for Environmental Notebook? Call assistant city editor Cynthia Kyle at 377-1262, or write her at 120 E. Lenawee Lansing MI 48919.
