Louis 48. Lansing State JoumalDAVIO OLDS By MARTY ACKLEY Lansing State Journal Waverly joined a growing list of survivors in the Capital Area Conference Tuesday night But the question still hovers: Who will finally fall to the dangerous, but last-place Grand Ledge Comets. The host Warriors (6-3, 10-4) needed a big fourth quarter, ignited by senior guard Keith Peterson, to outlast Grand Ledge 44-40. Waverly is the fifth straight CAC team to escape with a victory over the Comets (0-8, 2-12). Grand Ledge has lost by five points or less to Sexton, Everett, East Lansing, and now Waverly.

Jackson was on the ropes before pulling away by eight at the end of its game. "We play hard," Grand Ledge coach Bob Harla said. "I don't think we play like a last-place team. We're going to steal one yet. "The kids are working real hard and when you have a record like ours and they're still playing hard, that says something." The Comets' style of relentless defense and deliberate offense frustrates opposing teams.

Waverly won this season's first matchup with Grand Ledge 37-30. Tuesday was no different. Grand Ledge led 15-10 at the half, with Waverly hitting only four of its 24 shots in the first two quarters. The Warriors were Called at four points for a stretch 'exceeding eight minutes. J-1 It was an easy half to keep score, -but pure anguish to watch.

I "We were getting good shots and putbacks, but they weren't falling Tin." Waverly coach Phil Odium "I told them to keep taking their shots and don't start second guessing their shots. "I knew Grand Ledge plays this -way. It's hard to prepare and I told tiy kids not to be upset by the -score, they played a good game." Despite losing a 40-29 battle on he boards, the young, short and scrappy Comets built a 22-14 lead Nearly in the third quarter, using ive points by Dan Warren and a -0air of free throws from Jon Ver-3alka. Then Waverly began to zero -in. The Warriors went on a 1 4-4 run jo take a 28-26 lead with 7:06 to play.

Peterson scored seven in that stretch and Clayton Burch had six, including a four-point play. The Comets remained undaunted, hitting three 3-pointers when it Mooked like Waverly was ready to -put the game away. Eric Dicker-Json's second of three treys in the game gave Grand Ledge a 35-33 Jedge with 3:07 to go. But two big defensive plays by Waverly in the last two minutes 'slayed the great expectations on Grand Ledge sideline, Tied at 35, Peterson blocked a 3-" point shot and was fouled in the race to his own basket He made -good on both free throws. Later, after hitting a pair of free -throws, 6-6 center Demetrius JHodge raced down court to inter-cept a court-length pass intended for a Grand Ledge player standing lalone in the backcourt.

Hodge passed the ball up to Peterson who was then fouled, Peterson's two free throws with 38 Seconds left opened up a 43-37 Wa-'verly lead. It was a slim enough lead to rescue another CAC couldabeen. "We knew we were going to be jn a game like this," Odium said. CTm very proud of my kids. We got Jn the lead and didn't try to run away with it" Odium is also proud his team las stepped up with the loss of their injured leading scorer Zach "-Parsons.

The cast on Parsons injured right foot is expected to come off this week and Odium topes to have his 18-point scorer jback for the last couple games before the state tournament "But the rest of the kids have Xeally picked it up."
