But then, Greyhound coach John Benington probably figured a 1-60 lead over favored Mason would somehow disappear. After all, he has never won a game in the Mason gym as coach of the boys' or girls' teams. enough, Mason got four free throws from Brad Fackler and a layin by Ryan VanHouten to pull out a 66-61 triumph in the Capital Circuit opener, i But Benington's team sent a strong message nevertheless that the predicted two-team race between Mason and Okemos might just have some company. Mason coach Dave Kalchik was elated to escape with the win and happy his Bulldogs (4-0) are off until the new year. "We set a goal to win our first four games in December and we've done that," said Kalchik, who in six seasons at the school had never won his first four games.

"December has never been a kind month to us. Last season we opened the league at Eaton Rapids, had a 10-point lead late in the game and lost Eaton Rapids has always played us tough and that's a credit to the coaching of John Benington. Tonight, his kids played awfully welL especially on defense." I "I was hoping it wouldn't be a blow out," Benington said. "I thought the kids played very hard and hung in there right to the end and this effort should indicate they can play with anybody in this league. It was our best game yet and now we look forward to Mason coming to our place." The manner in which Mason presented itself early in the game led many Bulldog fans to believe they were in for an easy night With senior guard Fackler scoring 10 points, the Bulldogs shot out to a 12-4 advantage.

But guard Bill Drinkwater led a charge to close the gap to 12-9 before the quarter ended and Mason on top, 20-14. Drinkwater had eight points in the spurt Baskets by VanHouten and Matt Schwab staked Mason to a 33-23 lead at the five minute mark of the second quarter before another Eaton Rapids run cut the deficit to 35-31 at intermission. "In this league, you have to be mentally prepared to play every night and I don't think we were tonight," Kalchik said. "Maybe Waverly looked past us Tuesday and we beat them and maybe tonight we looked past Eaton Rapids and almost lost But Eaton Rapids just seems to give us a game every time we play them. One thing, they sent us a message and maybe sent the league one too." Eaton Rapids (0-4) tied the game at 37 on a dunk by Drinkwater, fell behind when Fackler scored, knotted the game at 39 on two KG Church free throws and took its first lead of the game at 5:27 on a bank Everett From us through the year," Jones said.

"We're not good enough to not play hard and beat people. Every night, they now know they have to get up fpr everybody."
