2B LocalState Lansing State Journal Monday, Sept. 13, 1993 GREATER LANSING DIGEST Environmental Notebook that provides free and low-cost health screenings for people of mid-Michigan who do not have access to adequate health care coverage. Free tests include blood pressure, biolectrical impedancebody fat composition, vision and glaucoma, hearing, pulmonary function, leg pain screening and height and weight management Free counseling from Sparrow Hospital pharmacists, family practitioners, nurses, obstetricians, gynecologists and dietitians will be available. Low-cost screening will include a blood panel test $12; blood test for prostate cancer screening, $25; and a take-home colorectal cancer screening kit $4- No registration is necessary. Physicians Health Plan members will receive all tests free with a PHP card.

GRAND LEDGE Computer skills class to meet A six-week computer skills class offered by Grand Ledge Community Education will meet from 3 pm to 5 pm Mondays, beginning Sept 20. Cost is $60 and the class is limited to six students. The class will teach basic IBM computer use, including DOS commands, a simple work processing program, a file program and several graphics programs. MASON Down Home Days to broadcast show People will be literally dancing in the streets of downtown Mason on Friday during the 20th annual Mason Down Home Days. A "Sunset Sale" by merchants will be accompanied by radio station WTTL's live broadcast from 4 pm to 8 pm from the Ingham County Courthouse lawn. Kid's Night activities will have games and prizes on the courthouse square at 7 pm On Saturday, more than 175 artists and crafts people will display work on the square. A Punt Pass Kick Contest at Mason High School will begin at 9 am. At 7:30 pm there will be a Las Vegas Night at the PS Room at Mason Bowling Center.

LANSING Health-O-Rama scheduled Saturday Sparrow Hospital will host its fifth annual Health-O-Rama from 10 am to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lansing MalL Health-O-Rama is a health screening program EPA offers pesticide-use data to public The Environmental Protection Agency is offering a free, 37-page report detailing pesticide sales and use figures from 1990 and 1991. The report says pesticide use remained stable over the past 15 years, with about 1.1 billion pounds (four pounds per capita) per year. The easy-to-reproduce report will be valuable to those tracking the coming debate on pesticide reform.

Americans support environmental shift While 56 percent of those responding to a Times-Mirror Magazines-Roper National poll would resist raising taxes to spend more on environmental programs, 59 percent believe government spending should be shifted from other areas to the environment The poll, commissioned by the magazine group's Conservation Council, surveyed 1,005 respondents in April, and found 56 percent would like to volunteer for environmental work if they knew where to look. While 21 percent have done green volunteer work in the past two years, only 38 percent knew of local opportunities. Environmental Notebook runs every Monday. An extensive search by civil air patrol, military, fellow bush pilots, fish and wildlife personnel, and Roger's brother, Skip Dowding, was coordinated by the RCC (Rescue Coordination Center) in the areas north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Arctic Ocean. The search was hampered due to poor weather conditions for nearly a week. On September 5th, Roger's plane was sited by a fellow bush pilot, Don Ross, and by business associate, guide Deborah Drissel, in the Brooks Range mountains. Roger is best known for his participation in the April 1992 release of National Geographic "Braving Alaska," produced by Mark Stoffer. Roger was the bush pilot fea-tured in the film.

"Braving Alaska" has been nominated for several Emmy Awards. Roger had also just been awarded "Accident Free Year 1992" by the Alaskan Air Carrier Association. Roger is best known by fellow pilots and his customers for his humanitarian efforts and flying talents. Carol Hake (customer), Los Altos Hills, CA wrote, "Roger made each participant he flew feel special. Our final flight with Roger late June midnight sun cast purple shadows on the snow.

The clouds banked dark and then light behind COLLINS, HELEN M. Okemos Age 47, passed away on September 12, 1993. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada cn March 6, 1946, and has been a resident of Lansing since 1978. Mrs. Collins was employed as a Medical Assistant for Dr.

John K. Throckmorton. She was an active member and Deacon of The Presbyterian Church of Okemos; was a member of M.S.U. Blue Line Club; and the Greater Lansing Amateur Hockey Association (G.L.A.H.A.). Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Heather Collins of Grand Ledge; daughter, Michelle Collins of Okemos; granddaughter, Emily Collins of Grand Ledge; father, Fred T.

Hall of Cottam, Ontario; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Sue Hall of Stroud, Ontario; sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Allen McLoughlin of Calgary, Alberta; many nieces and nephews; best friend, Bernie Collins of Wil SHIPSKI. HAZEL L. (JORY) Lansing Age 92, died September 11, 1993 in Lansing. Mrs. Shipski was a member of Judson Memorial Baptist Church for over 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her hus-bands, Bruce Jory (1946) and Fred Shipski (1962); and her son, Max Jory (1990). Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Beverly (Ray) Van Amburg of Lansing and Mrs. Carla (Jim) Reilly of Holt; 1 son. Vane (Doris) Jory of Lansing; 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 15, 1 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Lansing Chapel with the Rev. Thomas G. Bayes, Jr. officiating.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the Chapel DOWDING, ROGER DEAN Age 43, born August 17, 1950 in Albion, passed on to be with the Lord and his father, Vern, August 29, 1993. Roger is survived by his daughter, Sarah of North Pole, AK; mother, Freda of Springport, MI; brothers, Sam of Raleigh, NC, Maurice "Skip" and David, both of Springport; sister, Janice Johnson of For-tine, MO; and former Marilyn of North Pole, AK. Roger, a bush pilot in Alaska for the last 17 years, started Yukon Air Service in 1983. Yukon Air transported hunters, river rafters and hikers to various points of the Sheenjek, Colleen and Porcupine River, and to various points north of the Brooks Range.

Roger was determined missing on August 31, 1993 in the Brooks Range after a 48 hour lapse DENNIS, ROSE JANE East Lansing Age 71, died September 11, 1993 in East Lansing. Born April 17, 1922 in Lansing, Mrs. Dennis was formerly employed at F.N. Ar-baugh's and retired from J.C. Penney's.

Surviving are Shelby, her husband of 52 years; 1 daughter, Bonnie (Allen) Rosek-ranz of East Lansing; 2 grandchildren, Trish and Todd Rosekranz; 1 great grandson; mother, Katherine Smith of Lansing; 1 sister, Gol-die (Bruce) DeVries of Farwell, MI; 1 sister-in-law. Fern Frisbee of Grand Ledge; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 14, 10 a.m. at Gorsline-Runciman Lansing Chapel with the Rev. Dr.

Richard E. Murdoch, SPALDING, MORTIMER "JACK" Okemos Age 96, died September 12, 1993. Born June 9, 1896 in Perry, MI. Mr. Spalding was the founder of Ace Rug Cleaners; was a 75 year member of B.P.O.E.

196; and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes (1988). Surviving are 1 daughter, Marilyn H. Spalding of East Lansing; 1 son, John M.

(Mary Ellen) Spalding of Okemos; 4 grandchildren, Steven (Pam) Spalding of Williamston, Susan (William) Keiser of Boyne City, Sally (Phil) Clark of Jack HOFFMAN, HATTIE M. Lansing Age 98. died Friday, September 10, 1993 in Florida. Mrs. Hoffman was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church all her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband. Clarence in 1962. Surviving are 2 sons. Gerald (Alice) Hoffman and Clarence (Eva) Hoffman; 2 daughters, Jean (Herb) Holliday and Lorena (Ray) Ruth; 2 daughters-in-law, Clara Hoffman and Sandy Hoffman; 20 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren also survive. Helms was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and Chester Helms. He was the beloved husband of Tina; beloved father of Elizabeth Ann and Thomas Chester-Joseph at home.
