4C Saturday, January 18, 1997 Lansing State Journal PREP BASKETBALL TENNIS Morrice grabs first place Chans marches on last year. He was the first African-American to reach the final there since Arthur Ashe won in 1975. "Losing in the final of Wimbledon took a lot away from the other six victories," Washington said Friday, after beating Australian Todd Woodbridge 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in the third round of the Australian Open. "Now I know how Goran feels losing in the final at Wimbledon a couple of times. "For me the goal is to win a Grand Slam.

You get as far as Wimbledon, you get to the finals of a Grand Slam, which is always a dream. Now I want to take it one step farther and win a Grand His other aim is to break into the top 10. "I've never been in the top 10," said Washington, currently ranked 23rd in the world. "I've been 11, about 80 times over my career, so I'd like to crack the top 10." Washington is playing in his seventh Australian Open. His best effort so far was making the quarterfinals in 1994.

"One of these years, hopefully this year, I would like to take it a step farther and see how good I can really do," he said. He faces 14th-seeded Felix Mantilla of Spain in the fourth round. No. 2 seed gets past Henman in three sets Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia Second-seeded Michael Chang advanced to the round of 16 in the Australian Open Friday, beating Britain's Tim Henman 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 with deft lobs and precision passing shots. Henman attacked throughout the match, but Chang usually had an answer, or had help from the overanxious Briton, who had 40 unforced errors.

"Tim is a very talented player I just feel like I have to do a little bit of everything to beat him," Chang said. Henman looked like he was turning the match around in the second set when he broke service in the fourth game, charging Chang's second serve to put away a volley and an overhead on the last two points. Chang broke back in the seventh game with help from Henman, was broken again in the eighth, and broke back again in the ninth, also with help from errors. Henman opened the tiebreaker with a double fault one of six for the night and never recovered. Carlos Moya, a rising Spanish 7-1).

The Orioles (4-0, 7-1) took over sole possession of first place in the Mid-State Athletic Conference with a convincing 82-70 victory over Ashley (3-1, 5-4).

"We played tonight like we haven't practiced in a while," Ashley coach Gary Schestag said. "I was really disappointed in that. "I thought with this level of a ball-game, with Morrice and us both being tied for the league lead, that in itself would be enough to bring out the intensity and it never showed tonight." The scoring was balanced throughout much of the half before Morrice took control with a 36-24 lead at halftime. "I just think we played better defense overall," Ashley coach Jim Le-mire said. The second quarter was the difference in the game with the Orioles outscoring Ashley 18-9.

The Bears never recovered from the halftime deficit. "We just moved the ball to the open man. That's what we said we wanted to do at half time," Lemire said. "They were sagging and we just wanted to get the ball moved around a little bit. Our plays didn't really work because they sagged so much.

Anything we tried to cut or run through, they just backed up." Jason McCarthy led the Orioles with 28 points, including four 3-point goals. "We're a team that normally boards very well and we didn't do that on either end of the floor tonight," Schestag said. "We were getting one shot and no offensive rebounds and at the other end, if they weren't scoring on their first shot, they were getting two or three opportunities." Morrice scored the first five points of the second half before Ben Crocker netted a 3-pointer for the Bears at the 6:08 mark of the third quarter. Kris Smith had 21 points for Morrice and Kirk DeFreen had 14. The Morrice game plan was to stop Crocker andkeep him under 20 points.

He finished with 18. "The key to the game was that the other kids didn't pick up the slack for them, and I thought our kids did," Lemire said. Kevin Gavenda scored 16 points for Ashley and John Fabus finished with 11. "I felt that we're quick enough and have enough depth that we should have been able to run the ball on them and play more of a full-court type of game, Schestag said. "And we didn't do that." Morrice took a 70-46 lead, the biggest of the game, with just over five minutes left in the game.

Schestag had seen enough and took a seat next to his players on the bench. He didn't get up and barely said a word for the rest of the game. "I'm a very active coach and I fuess I was somewhat at a loss," chestag said. "We pretty much ran the gamut. Not so much as a key to stop them, but as a key to get us nave some pretty quick ana ggressive kids on this team and they weren't quick and aggressive tonight.

They were tentative." The Bears were on a four-game win streak after losing their first two games of the season. Schestag said he had no idea how his team would do this season with no returning Starters. Friday's game was a wake-up call. "Tonight we took a step back," he said.
