By Matt Charboneau Lansing State Journal When East Lansing's Kyle Guer-' rant was forced to leave the game in the third quarter because of a cut above his left eye, things were looking bad for the Trojans. After dominating most of the game, they had given up a nine-' point lead and were tied with Sexton at the end of the quarter.

But when the fourth quarter start- ed, the bandaged Guerrant was back and so was the Trojan intensity. East Lansing (4-2, 8-3) pulled away in the final quarter to move past Sexton in the Capital Area Conference with a 73-63 win. The Trojans remained tied for second place with Holt and Waver-ly, both winners on Friday. Everett stayed in first place with a win over Grand Ledge. "We played to our potential tonight," East Lansing coach Chris Ferguson said.

"I knew we were in a good position if we just continued to work hard." Despite shooting only 53 percent from the free-throw line, the Trojans never trailed. They opened up a 19-9 margin In the first quarter with the help of a swarming full court press that had Sexton throwing the ball away and taking bad shots. "We decided to throw a lot of people at them," Ferguson said. "We pressed them all night and came at them like a pack of wolves." Guerrant helped East Lansing open the early lead with his dominating low-post offense. He scores 1 4 of his game 24 in the first half as the Trojans went into halftime with a 37-33 lead.

Sexton's winter homecoming festivities forced a longer-than-usual halftime, and East Lansing seemed to be flat starting the third quarter. Sexton (3-3, 6-5) was able to fight back behind the scoring of Ron Banks. Banks led the Big Reds with 23 points, scoring 10 in the third quarter to tie the game at 50. It was the first time the game had been tied since the tipoff. With Guerrant out due to the cut and guard Jason Cousinard playing with four fouls, the Trojans looked to be in trouble.

But Guerrant came back to score six points in the final minutes and John Elworth scored six, including a layup with 1 minute and 20 seconds left to put East Lansing up 65-59. "I just have to thank my teammates for getting me the ball," Guerrant said. "This gets the monkey off our back. Now we know that we can beat anyone." Ferguson knew the rough third quarter wouldn't keep his team from winning. "This team doesn't fold," he said.

"It is the hardest working group I've ever had here. I'm just proud of their work ethic." Sexton coach Mike Major said it was East Lansing's turn to win, and they deserved it "You can't say anything bad," he said. "East Lansing outplayed us and they hit their free-throws when they needed to." The Trojans were 7-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Elworth finished with 14 for East Lansing and Couisnard chipped in 12. Dion Woods and DeQuarius Stewart each scored nine for the Big Reds and Calvin Wheeler added eight EAST LANSING (73) Hagan 1 2-3 4.

By Bob Gross Lansing State Journal CHARLOTTE Jason Price thrives on big challenges. So it goes without saying just how huge his contribution was Friday night for the Okemos High Chieftains.

Huge enough that in all probability, the Capital Circuit basketball race might have come to an early end. Price popped in 21 points, ran the floor like a veteran quarterback engineers his offense and Okemos held off determined Charlotte, 59-54, to open up a two-game lead over Charlotte and Mason. Okemos moves to 5-0 in the conference, 10-1 for the year and has won its last seven games. Charlotte falls to 3-2 and 3-8. Okemos has five conference games left, three at home including a season-ending rematch with Charlotte.

"This is the kind of game I really enjoy playing," Price said. "My role is to do what it takes to help the team win. This was a big victory because it came on the road and that's not easy in this league. We're playing well now but we have to keep working hard and keep playing together." Dating back to last season, Okemos, the defending Capital Circuit champion, has won 30 of its last 32 games. But 5-0 is the only record new coach Dan Stolz was talking about Friday.

"We've got a little cushion now," he said. "It's never easy coming to Charlotte and winning. We knew they had players who could hit the 3 and they have talent, so for us to leave here with a victory is a tribute to the way we handled the pressure down the stretch." Pressure which should have mounted the past two weeks when Stolz suspended four players for breaking training rules. "I can't say enough about the way the kids have come together," Stolz said. "We're still trying to find the right chemistry.

I brought up two sophomores and a freshman so we're searching. Tonight, I thought the guys really had a lot of poise when Charlotte made it a at the end." Okemos opened a 7-0 lead, all of the points coming from Price. The Chieftains went on to take a 32-25 halftime advantage before Charlotte used a 12-6 run to trail 38-37 going into the final eight minutes. A 9-0 spurt, with Price contributing four points, staked Okemos to a 47-37 advantage, but Charlotte, clinging to life by the 3-point shot, battled back. A long-distance basket by Travis Silvas narrowed the gap to 55-52 with three minutes to play and foiling a turnover, Travis put up a 3-point attempt which danced on the rim and fell off.

But Travis was fouled on the attempt and went to the line for three free throws. His first shot failed, but he made the next two and it was 55-54 with only 25.1 seconds remaining. An offensive foul sent Price to the stripe and he made both tosses and it was 57-54. An intentional foul gave Okemos two more free throws and Joe Wenzel made both. Okemos made 10 of 12 free throws in the final quarter.

"Travis and (Rory) Nevins really really took over in the late going and gave us a chance to win," Coach Barry Markwart said. "We have eight losses but in four games we've been right there. We've come back from 12- and 14-point deficits. Tonight we were down seven at the half and came back again. It's a tough loss for the kids.

But Okemos made the free throws when they needed to and Price really is a nice player for them." Joe Fletcher and Wenzel each scored 11 points for Okemos and center Matt Hulteen added nine along with eight rebounds. OKEMOS (59) Fletcher 4 34 11. Hulteen 4 1-2 9. Jason 8 2-3 21.
