The Eagles stopped the Pirates, 70-60.

DeWitt rally Continued FROM 1C By the time the Pirates put a stop to it, they were down 30-15. The Pirates managed to cut it to 38-28 at the half, thanks to strong inside play from Piggott The 6-6 center finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Bruce Hungerford, who scored 14 for Fowler, took over in the third quarter, finishing strong with eight points and a couple of strong low-post moves. At the end of three, the rout was on, with Fowler firmly in command, 58-39. A Pirate mini-rally in the fourth quarter came up short.

With 5:26 left to play Andy Piggott converted a pair of free throws to pull P-W within 11 at 61-50. But each time they looked ready to run, the Pirates squandered key chances: missing free throw opportunities and turning the ball over. The Pirates could get no closer than the final 10 point margin in what finished as a foul-fest All of the Eagles' fourth quarter points 12 of them came from the free-throw line. 6 singles, but the Spartans lost 6-1. "I fought hard today," Murray said. "It's nice to win, but if the team doesn't win, it really doesn't mean anything. We needed to focus on the Irish. They played like they were ranked.

But it's nice to step up and to be playing well." Murray came back from a 3-0 deficit in the first set and sailed through the second. He earned the No. 6 spot after winning a challenge match with No. 7 Ben Hetzler in the third set, 7-5, earlier this week. Capitol City Baptist, 20 points, 15 rebounds Clayton Burch, Waveriy, 20 points Notre Dame routs MSIL 6-1 TENNIS The Spartans gave the Fightin' Irish a run for their money, though. A majority of the sets finished at 7-5, 6-4 or 6-3 and one match went three sets, only to be decided by a tiebreaker. "We seemed sluggish and the intensity wasn't there," Orlando said.

"We still have to find a way to win. They found them, so there's no excuses. We have the ability to beat anyone, but we have to capitalize and take advantage of the points." Although Notre Dame won the doubles 2-1, the pair of victories were earned by a slim margin. The team of Jim Madrigal and Murray lost 8-3 and Luke Linder and Hetzler fell 8-6 in pro sets. MSU's Jayson Bedford and Dan Wallihan pulled out an 8-3 win against Ryan Simme and John-O'Brien at first singles.

At No. 1 singles, Simme went on to defeat Bedford 6-4, 6-3 and O'Brien defeated Madrigal 7-5, 6-3 at No 3 singles. Wallihan lost to Mike Sprouse at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-3. The Spartans face Ball State Saturday.

By Tami Watt Lansing State Journal EAST LANSING It's a little ironic that the person who wasn't even supposed to start got the only win against the top-ranked foe. Michigan State tennis coach Gene Orlando wasn't going to use sophomore Aaron Murray as a singles player this week, but a challenge match proved otherwise. Murray got the only MSU singles win against No. 15 Notre Dame Tuesday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. He defeated Ron Mancias H.
