"Waverly students competed in Ann Arbor against students from 13 other schools in three competition caterogies: humorous, serious and multiple tatlon. i All 50 Waverly participants won certificates of expedience in the middle-junior high school challenge.

The team's coach is Lynne Shapiro. The competition takes place twice a year and is by the Michigan Schools Forensic Associ- ation. EATON RAPIDS Three teachers win service awards Mary Ann Warren, Gwen Bradish and Chick Fox have won teacher appreciation and community service awards. The awards were sponsored by American Legion Post No. 15.

The winners were nominated by other Eaton Rapids Public Schools teachers. HOWELL Coordinator of gifted program elected Carolyn Hannum, gifted and talented coordinator for the Livingston Intermediate School District, was recently elected president of the Michigan Association of Educators for the Gifted, Talents and Cre ative. The professional group has about 500 members. Before she began working in Livingston County, Hannum was a giftedtalented consultant for Kent Intermediate School District She has 18 years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher. She also teaches at Eastern Michigan University.

DIMONDALE Rezoning near U.S. 27 on agenda A request by a concrete pipe manufacturer to re-1 zone about three acres along U.S. 27 near Potterville will be discussed Wednesday by the Windsor Township Planning Commission. Northern Concrete Pipe near the intersection of U.S. 27 and Windsor Highway, wants to expand its concrete pipe storage area.

The three acres are southwest of its current site. A half-dozen Windsor Highway residents told the commission May 4 that they oppose the rezoning. The company wants to rezone the property from a highway services use to an industrial classification. The commission meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the TJld Township Hall, 257 S.

Bridge St. ST. JOHNS Nursing home will add three wings The Hazel I. Findlay County Manor has announced a $2.5 million fund drive to add 65 beds to the nursing home. The construction will add three wings extending from the northeast corner of the' home at 1101 S.

Scott Road, said Harold Benson, chairman of the board. The addition will raise capacity to 173 residents, he said. An $800,000 construction-drive to open the home began in 1979. Since the home opened three years later, the occupancy rate has averaged 99.5 percent In 1985 the home received the "Facility Excel lence Award" from the Health Care Association of Michigan. In 1987 it received the "Facility of the Year" award from the Michigan Nonprofit Homes Association.

EAST LANSING Four win spots at Chemistry Olympiad Four local high students have been selected by the Michigan State University section of the American Chemical Society to represent central Michigan in the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. The students are Brian Moore from Everett High School, Jim Jewett from Holt High School and Alexander Ackley and Michael Jones from Owosso High School. The National Olympiad identifies the top 20 high school chemistry students in the country. From these, four are selected to represent the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad from July 2 through July 10 in Helsinki, Finland.

LANSING Parking downtown is free this Monday Parking in downtown Lansing will be free Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Parking fees will not be collected in the South Washington Maillot. Residents who normally receive garbage pickup Monday will not be served. Lathrop Street fire started in basement A fire at 537 Lathrop St. Saturday morning started in the basement and burned through the living room floor, a Lansing Fire Department spokesman said. The room was destroyed, and smoke, heat and water damaged the rest of the home. Damage to the structure and its contents is pegged at about $20,000. No one was home when the fire was reported at 5:14 a.m.

May 23. Marchus Keenoy, former fire chief Lansing State Journal Marchus Keenoy former chief of the Lansing Fire Department, has died at age 72.

Keenoy joined the fire department in 1940 and retired as its "chief in 1966. He once described firefighting 'as "a hard, mean job." But he loved it enough for his son to follow in his footsteps. Marchus Keenoy Jr. was killed in 1970 while battling a fire at the Mar- shall Music Co. Keenoy Sr.

He graduated from St. Mary High School in 1935. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Commander's Club, and the Old Newsboy's Association. He joined the Lansing Fire Department in June 1940, and retired as its Chief in July 1966. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark in 1970.

Surviving are his wife, Ann; 2 daughters, Andrea Arbuthnot of Tucson, AZ, Mary and husband, Alan Harvey of Midland; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Helen VanKempen and Ann Cullen, both of Lansing; nieces and nephews. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. Germain Belen at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1515 W.

Lansing Age 78, passed away May27, 1988. She was born December 21, 1909 in Dresden, TN and had been a resident of Lansing for 45 years. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Carl (Jeariette) Wilkinson of Pontiac and Mrs. Jo Alice Beckwith of Lansing; 1 son. Harold White of Tampa; 1 sister, Mrs. Eula Watson of Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

Religious services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Estes-Leadley Greater lansing Chapel, with Rev. Kevin M. Ahrens of Bethany Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday. Me HORN, MARIAN DODGE East Lansing Age 84, passed away May 25, 1988. She was born August 7, 1903 in Lansing, the youngest daughter of Frank and Abby Dodge and was a granddaughter of James and Marian Turner, pioneer residents of Lansing.

Mrs. Horn was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the St Elizabeth's Guild. She attended Lansing High School and graduated from Mary Lyons Finishing School in Pennsylvania, and she attended the University of Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Horn on March 22, 1948 and by her son, James Thomas Horn, Jr.

on September 23, 1953. Surviving are 2 nieces, Mrs. Robert Pemberton of Lansing and Mrs. James Griffin of Baltimore, MD; and Lansing KOST, THEODORE J. JR.

Lansing Age 36, died May 26, 1988. He was born June 29. 1951 in Lansing. Mr. Kost had been employed as a journeyman millwright with Dana Corporation for 1 1 years and was an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 141, and a member of the UAW.

724. He was a 1969 graduate of J.W. Sexton. Surviving are his loving wife, Lorinda; beloved son, Nicholas Theodore; his parents, Theodore J. and Betty L.

of Lansing; grandmother, Catherine Kost of Lansing; 1 sister, Kristine M. (Robert) Pritchard of Sumner, MI; 4 brothers, Michael E. (Joy) of DeWitt, David A. (Sheryl) of Holt, Stanley (Lisa) of Holt HOLLAND, CHARLES F. SR.

M.D. East Lansing Age 87, died May 28, 1988, born December 31, 1900 in Webber-ville. Dr. Holland is survived by his wife, Irene; 1 daughter, Mrs. John (Dorris) Miller of Denver, CO; 1 son, Charles Jr.

M.D. (Bonnie) of Eugene, OR; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church and their choir. She worked for the Michigan Department of Social Services. Survivors include her sister, Virginia Potter of Flint; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ira Rose, mother, Dora Rose and brother, Glenn Rose. Services 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Hint with Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Delta Mills United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home.
