N. MICHIGAN MARQUETTE a r. a 1 gize for the size of the store. "Look, Glenn Brown (Northern Michigan coach) and I are both brick-layers," McGuire said. "I don't want to run up the score on him." The game, for all practical purposes, was over by half-time.

And that caused McGuire a little uneasiness. MILWAUKEE (AP) Marquette Coach Al McGuire was embarrassed Tuesday night following his top-ranked War-r i s' shellacking of out-manned Northern Mich. 106-57. "It was a laugher, a mismatch," McGuire said. "What more can you say?" McGuire then tried to apolo "Did you notice the lights flicker at the start of the second half? McGuire asked.

"I thought for a moment: 'Here we are with a 32-point lead and we have to forfeit the Look, if we have to forfeit, why one where you have the game in the bag?" The Warrior coach then won- Roger Lee Boehmer's life acles." One mav not quite be deemed a miracle, but Broncos Gallop, dered out loud, not directing the question to anyone in particular. "Do I seem as if I'm not laughing as much this year? Why?" McGuire might have seemed a little afraid to laugh, but the crowd of 10,472 that saw the game was delighted. After Northern Michigan jumped off to a 3-0 lead, Marquette stormed back with blistering outside shooting to take a 17-6 advantage. The lead was built rapidly as Dean Meminger, who led the Warriors with 20 points, Allie McGuire, Gary Brell and Bob Lackey all found the range from 25 to 30 feet out. At the half, Marquette led 60 -27.

Northern's Mike Duehning, a 6-foot-6 junior from Slinger, who started the game sitting on the bench, put on a one-man show at the start of the second half. Although the Wildcats never drew any closer than 25 points at 66-41, Duehning brought the crowd alive again by tallying 16 of 21 points after intermission. Later, the fans started cheering for Marquette to top the 100-point mark, a goal the Warriors reached with 1:07 remaining in the game. "We used the game as a McGuire said. "That's why I kept my starters in for so long and why we stayed in the full court man-to-man press.

They needed the workout." The game was tight until the final 10 minutes of the first half, when substitutes Lionel Moltimore and Ernest Pettis sparked Western to a ff-42 half-time lead. Moltimore clicked for five field goals, ending with 11 points in that stretch, and Pettis sank four of five shots during that time. Boehmer, a 25-year-old fork-lift operator at the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, was town blind.

And. for the fust four-and-one-half years. Roger couldn't see a thing. "In fact. I don't remember too much about those early years, except that my brothers would leave me alone on the front porch and I'd sit there and try to pick up and recognize sounds," said Boehmer.

"It wasn't much fun." Then, almost miraculously, when Boehmer was somewhere between his fourth and fifth birthday, he saw for the first time. "I never had anv operations on my eyes or anything like that." Boehmer said! "The only thing that I can credit for my sight was my mother's faith in the Lord and her prayers." Boehmer. whose eyesight has been steadily improving ever since, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boehmer, 814 E.

Grand River. Because his vision was stil! well-below normal. Roger attended the Michigan School for the Blind, graduating in i4. "My evesight was good enough toward the end at MSB that I could have gone to a public school." said Boehmer. "But, I had already made friends there and wanted to stick it out." It was during his years as a student at MSB.

where he was also a state champion Class wrestler at 145 pounds, that Roger became acquainted with bowling. And, that's the second part of Boehmer's story. Roger has been bowling since he was 13 or 14. and although his average roams anywhere from 120-140 he's a tournament bowler. "I don't know what happens, but I always do my best when I compete in a tournament," said Boehmer.

"I'm not that good of a bowler, yet I've won three trophies over the years." Boehmer's latest trophy, finishing as the top male in The State Journal's seventh annual 3-6-9 tournament in December, is miracle No. 2, although nowhere near as amazing as the first. "Winning that tournament was easily the highlight of my bowling career," said Boehmer. "I just got lucky at the right time, picked up a couple of strikes and some spares, and that's all there was to it." Boehmer, who bowls i the 300 Blind League at Cedarway, also won a trophy for being the top blind high school bowler in Michigan, as well as a trophy for high game with handicap in the state tournament. "If it weren't for doing so well in the 3-6-9 tournament, I'd strike this year off as a complete waste in bowling," said Boehmer.

"My average is down to 120 and that's embarrassing." Roger has a legitimate problem every time he bowls, though. Because he is in a blind league, there are rails set up along the approaches to help the bowlers and he has a hard time trying to bowl around these obstacles. "I'm lefthanded, and start way over to the right," said Boehmer. "I approach going to the left and more times than I'd like to remember, I hit the darn rail and end up with a gutter ball. "Needless to say, I'd like to get into a sighted league although I enjoy bowling with the blind." Boehmer, who is also an adept piano tuner, would like to get into the computer field, and has recently applied to take a night course in computers.

Now, if Roger can just find out from a computer how to hit the high scores in league competition, not just tournaments, he really would have something. The out-manned Spartans didn't come up with their best performance in ball-handling they had 18 turnovers in the game but were within striking distance until the last eight minutes. Again, paced by Carr who made a couple of "steals" to really ignite the crowd, Notre Dame ran up its 24-point margin late in the State trailed by nine with eight minutes left in the game. Rudy finished with 31 points-, hitting 11 of 23 field goal attempts. Most of his points were scored when he used a "solo" offense.

Dee was impressed with Benjamin's play. "He's not a superstar," the Notre Dame coach said, "but he certainly is a top professional prospect. He does everything well. He's a good out-side shooter and I like the way he drives." Spartan coach Gus Ganakas, of course, was impressed with Carr. "He's superb," Gus commented.
