Beardless Santas, thin and fat Santas, red and blue Santas, some long coats and some with short coats, some with angels and some with dancing beardless elves and none recent than 1918. Mary has collected nearly 500 of these. "Real cards, she says, "sent through the mail like our post cards today." Some of the cards are made from silk, some gelatin. They came from countries all over the world and depict the evolution of Santa from an el character to the roly-poly one so well known today. She has one from Germany, prior to 1910, showing Santa arriving in sandals ans swinging from a parachute while carrying a small fir tree.

There is a stern Santa, wearing a white cap and blue coat, holding switches as he peers into a window the tree inside decorated with candles. The description of Santa as a "right jolly old elf" takes on new meaning from a scene where little elves, carrying gifts on their backs, ski down a snow covered mountain slope. These old cards also illiminate the phrase "our society" today, as the invariably picture Santa with a very small minute gift wide selection phonos, hi-fi as the Magnavox Clock Radio all the most wanted features: automatically, wakes you to buzzer alarm.
