He is Val Raset. under contract to Columbia studios to teach dancing, and Astaire and Miss Hayworth never take a step except under his watchful eye. A short, slender Russian-born man with sandy hair. Raset has one the oddest jobs in pictures. Fellow ifilmers in "You Were Never Love-ilier" call him Mickey, and camera-jmen.

OF New One, However, Has 30, Including Betty Hutton, All on Even Basis By ERNEST FOSTER HOLLYWOOD (UP) Multiply the number of stars in a moving picture and vou multiply the problems that arise. Hollywood has tried great star combinations in several different ways, but all of them have crystallized into patterns. Among the first such productions was "Dinner at Eight." but it was impossible to make more than six or eight roles in the plot of equal importance to induce top stars to participate. After all, major stars can not be placed in bit roles just to swell the list of big names. Another multi-star type of pic ture is the episodic story, such as "If I Had a Million." In which a dying millionaire left a million dollars to 10 persons.

The film told the adventures of the 10 with their money. Cast Has 30 Stars But episodic ideas are difficult to find without repeating. In the mu sical field much the same principle has been followed with revues sort of super-vaudeville shows with a few dozen stars each doing an act. But such films have no real plots. Paramount has found a new way of presenting a score of the biggest names in the business in a single picture that at the same time main tains a continuous story tnreaa.

The film is "Star Spangled a musical with a comedy plot and some 30 top stars all being given opportunities to be seen on a level of equal importance. Key to the solution is the fact that the picture has a movie studio background Paramount studio itself. Stars Play Themselves Into the plot come Bing Crosby, Bob Hope. Dorothy Lamour, Paul-ette Goddard, Vera Zorina, Mary Martin. Ray Milland.

Fred Mac-Murray. Veronica Lake, Rochester, Katherine Dunham, Dona Drake, Victor Moore, Betty Rhodes, Marjorie Reynolds, Alan Ladd, Barbara Britton. Lynne Overman, Johnnie Johnston, Betty Hutton, and others. The picture even includes Producer-Directors Cecil B. DeMille and Preston Sturges.

All stars play themselves. The plot revolves around the efforts of a studio gateman and a telephone operator to entertain a bunch of sailors, all of whom be lipvp thP pntpman to he the head of FILMS PATTERN Buy War Bond and Stamp H- 0 NEW SHOW TODAY i 2 Grand Features 2 VICTOR MclAGLEII EDM0ND O'BRIEN JUNE HAVOC- LATEST NEWS EVENTS PLUS CAREY- Jean PHILLIPS Carrol (tosh -Rich. With deftness born of years in Russian ballet, Raset leaps out of the way of the oncoming camera, and all is well with the "Mickey is around to check on the dancing." someone will tell you. That's considerably less than the truth. It is a fact of a decade's standing in Hollywood that Fred needs little help when originating his dance routines. Astaire can create as well as execute. When the number's a double one, he does much of the plotting for his partner, too.

So Mickey Raset doesn't share any of the preliminary brainwork and tentative tapping that Astaire does for any single exhibition of his art. "Professional" Critic But once an Astaire routine is set. Raset can see its good points and possible bad ones better than anyone else Fred knows. For that reason the dancing star is glad to have Raset around when there is footwork to be done. It's Raset's job to see that they don't.

He balked at putting a slug in a church collection plate, and at throwing a rock through an orphan asvlum window. But he's still worried about losing a lot of fans through such small meannesses as sneering at a woman whose seat he has grabbed in a street car. Front Row By HAYDEN R. He. has been singing professionally for about five years, but every now and then some critic announces that Evans is the "find" of.

the season. It all started in Phila delphia where Evans' parents first discovered his voice. Then his Sun day school teacher did. Then a producer offered him an operetta role and he replaced Nelson Eddy when Eddy went to Hollywood. He sang a solo at the 100th anniversary con cert oi tne New York Philharmonic Symphony orchestra a year ago and.

was hailed as a "discovery." He sang in Carnegie hall and was declared a musical "find." Now when he returns from a tour to New York for the operetta season, he is a "discovery" again. George Tucker, New York columnist, believes that plays that nave sensationally long runs on Broadway do not. aa a rule, fare very well when they attempt revivals, lie cites "Abie's Irish Rose." That, he says, was a part of the very taproots of Broadway history, yet it was an abrupt failure when it was revived a couple of years ago. The Lansing Civic Players' guild is toying with an Idea to produce "Abie's Irish Kose" during its coming season. We believe it will be a play that Lansingites will want to see, despite Mr.

Tucker's belief. This story is told about Lunt and Fontaine at rehearsals: It seems they have a rule that after two weeks of rehearsal of a play they throw away the script and go on from Uiere on their own. They believe a fortnight is long enough for any actor to master a role. The story has it that Lunt is as nervous as a cat until the script is hurled into an empty coiner. The St.
