William Holden: Old heart grows cold PIUIPSTlj fly BERNARD DRKW Gannett News Service Crabbed age and youth is the theme of "Breezy" the new movie Clint Eastwood has directed all over Los Angeles with William Holden as a divorced man of 50. He made the San Fernando Valley his home, and he has allowed his half century old heart to grow cold, if not stop altogether. Then 17-year-old hippie Kay Lenz comes calling one day.

It is currently showing at the State Theater. WHILE SOMEONE biliously croons a song on the track about "pumkirt seeds and lime," written by the inevitable Michael Legrand and the Bergmans, poor waif Lenz sets about ingratiating herself with weary old Holden. Women can't help loving him, though it's hard to see why they remember him from "Sabrina Fair," or even "Golden Boy" and "Our Town" but he just can't be bothered by them anymore. So now he knows.

And he thinks and thinks. And then he goes to Plummer Park, where all good L. A. dope fiends cavort, and she is staring into space wistfully, and there we are, or are we? "Concern for another human being," he says thoughtfully. "Fantastic excitement." YEAH? BUT things do get a bit better for them, if not for us. until one night they run into his divorced wife who lurches over and goes into a drunken aria. Then, while sweating off middle-aged potbellies, his best friend sternly inform him that tempus fugit. At their age, they can expect a heart attack at any moment.

So what can old Holden do but turn the poor child out into the streets her young dope fiend friends aije only a canyon away.
