Burcham Hills Health Center in East Lansing. "She was very insistent she was women's editor and not society editor," recalled Hal Fildey, former executive editor of the Lansing State Journal, where Baird worked from 1952 to 1962.

Baird, he said, didn't want to be tagged a chronicler of the parties and balls of Lansing notables, as she honed news of general interest to women. As years passed and attitudes changed, newspapers turned away from news sections devoted to what was supposed to be women's interests. Baird was the State Journal's women's editor and food editor until she joined the Lansing-based Greater Michigan Foundation in Lansing as a writer and editor in 1962. In 1963, she began a 17-year career with the Continuing Education Service of Michigan State University Information Services. Marcia Van Ness, former reporter and former assistant editor of the State Journal's editorial page, knew Baird as an MSU news source.

Finishing that memoir took on a special mean ing recently. Wallace Robertson, pastor emeritus of Peoples Church in East Lansing, died Thursday. He was 85. "He was an amazing person," said Irene, his wife of 61 years. "He had so many talents." A native or Milwaukee, Wallace Robertson moved to East Lansing to serve at Peoples Church from 1960 to 1976 and hosted the daily devotional show "Thought for the Day" in the 1960s and 1970s.

He most recently lived in Grand Ledge. He was ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church in 1938. He's known for boosting membership at Peoples Church and rebuilding the sanctuary after it was destroyed by an electrical fire in 1965. Church services were held in a now-closed movie theater in East Lansing during construction. Peoples Church Rev.

Keith Pohl remembers Robertson and said one of his skills was knowing each church member by name. "He had the ability to focus directly on every individual that came into this church," Pohl said. An avid MSU sports fan, Robertson was able to travel with the Spartan football team as its chaplain during his time at Peoples Church. He was named an honorary alumnus of MSU in 1970 and was awarded the doctor of divinity degree by Carroll College, his alma mater in Wisconsin, and Olivet College.
