is is is is is is is is is WEDNESDAY THE STATE JOURNAL OCTOBER 9, 1918 13 HEALTH OFFICERS COMBAT INFLUENZA State Closing Order Held- Up; Educational Drive Started Against Malady. There will be a campaign of education carried on by the state health department and local health authorities throughout the state in an effort to prevent the spread of Spanish influenza. This course of action, toNiger with the matter of closing theaters and other public places, will be left in the main to local health boards, with the state department giving whatever assistance be needed. This manner of combating the influenza was decided on at the conference of health officers with R. M.

Olin of the state health departfrom cities with two or ment afternoon. Reports Tuesdaerent three exceptions showed that the socalled epidemic was at yet very light and it was the consensus of opinion that a state wide closing order would be far too drastic at this time. Jackson Leads State. Jackson has the largest number of "flu" cases among the civilian population of any place in the state the number Tuesday totaling about 370. It may be necessary to close some of the theaters in other places if the eases continue to increase.

Battle Creek reported about 120 cases, and the situation was not considered serious enough to contemplate closing public places. Lansing reported about 50 cases. Mt. Clemens, with Selfridge Field 1o- cated near its suburbs, is entirely free from the epidemic, while Bay City. Flint, Grand Rapids, Owosso, Pontiac, Niles and Muskegon each have a few cases.

Co-operation of the families in each city or community was considered the essential thing to bring effective results in controlling the spread of the disease. The following resolutions were adopted at the meeting and Dr. Olin stated they would be the basis of instructions to be forwarded to all places in the state: Dr. Olin's Instructions. 1-All cases should be promptly reported to health officer.

2--Placard where practicable. 3-All children with colds be excluded from school at least 48 hours. 4-Leaving the advisability of forbidding public gatherings in hands of local authorities. 5--The' moving picture theaters to be used for preventative educational purposes and managers do their utmost to exclude and eject coughing and sneezing patrons. 6-Recommend that schools, churches, newspapers and a all available sources be used to enlighten the public as to the nature, danger and prevention of influenza.

7-We believe that influenza is spread by close contact, where coughing and sneezing prevalent. Therefore avoid crowds and cover up nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. 8-Warning If you have a. fe. ver.

go to bed and stay there until temperature has been normal three days, and thus avoid pneumonia. In accordance with the action taken by the health officers from different cities of the state in conference with Dr. R. M. Olin of the state board Tuesday, Dr.

H. L. Wright, city health director of Lansing advises the people to take every precaution against the contraction and spread of the Spanish influenza. He says: "About the best insurance one can out these days is to consult your family physician and get him to prescribe a nose and throat spray as a preventive measure against influenza and pneumonia. There was never a time in our history when prevention was more needed.

Your time and your life are worth more now than ever before. Do not take any unnecessary chances." Husband's Death Follows That of Wife, Same Cause Special to the State Journal. MASON, Oct. services will be held Thursday afternoon for James Van Camp, whose home was near Dansville. Mrs.
