Sheriffs' Association and the family of Airman 1st Class Michael Ray to a person who has made outstanding contributions to a victim or family whose life has been touched by crime in Michigan.

The award was established by Ray's family in 1991. Ray was murdered wjiile serving in the Air Force. Walters is a psychologist at Michigan's maximum security prison in Jackson. Through his work, he has earned an international reputation for his insights into serial killers and other murders. Free immunization clinics start today Free immunization clinics for area children will be held today and Saturday at area shopping centers.

The clinics, sponsored by Sparrow Health System, WLNS-TV (Channel 6) and the Ingham County Health Department will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the Frandor Shopping Center and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Logan Square Shopping Center.

Immunizations include diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, German measles, flu and hepatitis. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants are asked to bring their children's immunization records with them. The four-hour course includes lecturediscussion and workbook activities along with a variety of films. LANSING Party set for zoo society members The Potter Park Zoological Society will hold its fifth annual Members Only Party at 5 p.m. Aug. 16 at Potter Park Zoo. There will be free pony and camel rides for the kids, a picnic supper, music, magic and surprises.

Zookeepers will conduct a behind-the-scenes tour. Reservations are due Friday. Lansing man gets crime-fighting award Richard Walter of Lansing, a founder of the Vidocq Society, received the Michael Ray Award at the recent summer conference of the Michigan Sheriffs' Association in Muskegon. Walter received the award for his work and dedication to families of unsolved homicide cases, which is the mission of the Vidocq Society. The society was named for a Frenchman credited with being the first modern detective and is an international team of 82 detectives and specialists who take on unsolved homicides and try to track down the killers.

The Michael Ray award is annually presented by the AREA Cemetery schedules celebration Fort Custer Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Road, Augusta, will celebrate its 10th anniversary Sept 22 and 25 with a salute to the services that the 770-acre. cemetery has provided to a five-state area, including Michigan, since it dedicated on Sept 23, 1984. The celebration will begin on Sept 22 with tours of several historic buildings in the area that will be open to the public from noon to 4 p.m. At 6 p.m., a 10th anniversary and medal of honor dinner and social hour will be held at the American Legion Custer Post 54. Cost of the dinner is $14 and seating is limited to 300 people.

Associated Press John Hertel father of Democratic state House Leader Curtis Hertel and a Purple Heart recipient, died Tuesday at Saratoga Community Hospital in Detroit. Hertel, 74, had suffered from pneumonia before his death. Hertel was a former owner of Kaufmann's Cafe in Detroit from 1945 to 1976.

He served in the U.S. Army infantry and participated in the landing at Normandy, where he was wounded. He re-entered college at age 46 to get a master's degree in education from Wayne State University in 1981, and taught in the Detroit public school system. Born in Detroit on Feb. 20, 1920, Hertel lived in Harper Woods.

He was a member of Bruce Post No. 1146 VFW, the Key Webb Social Club and the Harper Woods Lions Club. His two other sons also have served in public office. John Hertel, a former state senator, is a Macomb County commissioner. Dennis Hertel is a former congressman.

Hertel is survived by his three sons, his wife of 53 years, Marie, 10 grandchildren and two sisters. Services are scheduled for Friday morning at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Harper Woods Lions Club. A.H.

Born November 30, 1913 in Furnas County, Nebraska, the son of Edward and Jessie (Walker) Cuckler, Dean was a Lansing resident for 54 years. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in their School of Aerial Photography at Chanute Field. He was then employed by Wallace Aerial Surveys of Spokane, WA, Abrams Aerial Survey and Abrams Instrument Co. of Lansing. With the Michigan State Conservation Department, later Natural Resources, he was employed for over 35 years as a Map-maker and Aerial Interpreter, retiring in 1981.

Predeceased by his parents; 3 brothers, Lee of Pennsylvania, Howard of Nebraska, Gordon of California; and triplets, Lois, Lynn and Lyle who died at 6 months; he is survived by his wife, Eleanor; 1 daughter, Deanna; 2 brothers, Dr. Ashton Cuckler of New Jersey, Raymond Cuckler of Yuma, AZ; 2 sisters, Helen Jewell of California, Hazel Raines of Colorado Springs, CO. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 11, 10 a.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel with the Rev.

Gary L. Simmons, Chaplain, Michigan Capital Medical Center, officiating. Interment will be in Deep-dale Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to I. service time.

Friends may call on Wednesday at 11 a.m. until service time at the Chapel. GILLESPIE, MAE L. Lansing 'Age 83, passed away on August 9, 1994. She was born on April 22, 1911 in Denmark, MI, and has been a resident of Lansing for the past 57 years, coming here from Flint.

Mrs. Gillespie was a life member of The Vivian Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1979. Surviving are 2 daughters and their husbands, Joan K. and Carl Rinckey of DeWitt, MI, Janet M.

and Raymond Guidos of Bloomfield Hills, MI; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren. Religious services will be conducted by The Rev. Larry D.
