Curb and gutter work is scheduled on Madison and a small part of Logan streets. Klemens said the project is expected to begin in August. ST. JOHNS Volunteers keep meals rolling Clinton Memorial Hospital volunteers have delivered more than 10,400 meals on wheels this year.

Barbara Helms, food and nutrition services manager, said in a report that volunteers' deliver 135 meals daily. The meals are delivered weekdays to people age 60 or older who cannot prepare food for themselves, she said. The fire, which began about 9:56 p.m. in an iip stairs bedroom of an apartment, caused $7,000 damage to the building and $2,000 damage to the contents, department officials estimated. The blaze was extinguished at 10:12 p.m.

No one was injured. Woman loses money in scam Lansing police are advising residents to be wary of an age-old pigeon-drop scam that caused a 30-year old woman to lose her savings. I The woman was approached last Friday by two people in the mart store at 5400 S. Cedar said Detective Tom Wilson of the Lansing fraud unit. A man-and-woman team told the victim that they were settling the estate of a dead relative and showed her a large sum of money.

She was asked to add some money to their money and to hold all of the cash for them until they concluded other business. The woman was promised $200 for every $100 of her money added to the amount. Wilson said the woman told police that she withdrew a large amount of money from her credit union and gave it to the scam team. The subjects put the money in a paper sack. They then gave a sack to the woman.

When they didn't return, the woman went to the trunk of her car where the money was stashed only to discover paper instead of the cash. Benefit picnic planned Friday The fourth annual Picnic on the Lawn to benefit the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame and Historical Center will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at 213 W. Main St.

Terry Lynn Hammond, 27, was standing in the middle of M-79 east of Curtis Road in Kalamo Township when he was struck and killed. Hammond had been a passenger in a vehicle that had hit a guardrail.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Eaton County Sheriff's Department investigators alleged that both vehicles were traveling at high speeds and that Farr's vehicle appeared to have been chasing the car Hammond was in, Lumbert said. PERRY Readers make run on books The Perry Library set records on the first day of the summer reading program. Young readers checked out 672 books at the Edna Bentley Library on June 1, surpassing the record of 474 books set last June 1. Children still may register for the program at the Perry and Shaftsburg libraries.

LANSING Apartment blaze investigated The Lansing Fire Department on Wednesday was investigating a Tuesday night blaze at 3959 Hunters Ridge. CHARLOTTE Fair entry deadlines coming up Young people planning to compete in 4-H or Future Farmers of America competitions in the Eaton County 4-H fair must enter by June 15. Entry forms for open-class exhibits are due July 8. More than 1,000 people are expected to enter exhibits in the fair, which runs July 23-30 at the fairgrounds here.

Forsberg Inc. of Okemos, will take part in the 11 a.m. ceremony. $500,000 road improvement approved The DeWitt City Council has approved a $500,000 street improvement project. Kurt Klemens, city manager, said DeWitt received a $200,000 major street grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The project includes curbs, gutters and storm sewers on East Main, Jefferson, Washington and Franklin streets downtown and repaving Turner Street from Herbison Road to East Dill Street MERIDIAN TWP Train hits abandoned truck Police are investigating a property damage accident on Grand Trunk Railroad tracks between Okemos Road and Park Lake Road at 4:52 a.m. Wednesday. An orange Ford pickup, abandoned on the tracks, was struck by a northeast-bound train. No one was seen in the area of the truck at the time of the accident. No injuries were reported.

CHARLOTTE Man faces manslaughter charge A Verpiontville man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in a May 21 traffic accident that killed a Charlotte man. Walter Roger Farr, 41, was arraigned Tuesday in 56th District Court in Charlotte. Post. MILES, ROBERT J. Dimondale Age 62, died June 8, 1988 at a Lansing hospital. Mr. Miles was born May 31, 1926 in Alton, IL, was a World War II veteran and retired from Owens-Illinois.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2406. Surviving are his wife, Velma; 1 daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Brenda) Putnam of Haslett; 3 sons, Robert of Lansing, Michael of New Hudson and Christopher of Dimondale; 6 grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Pauline Hunter; and 2 brothers, John and Walter Miles, all of Alton, IL.

SNEIDERS, EDGAR Lansing Age 76, died June 7, 1988. Born March 25, 1912 in Rauna, Latvia, Mr. Sneiders was a Lansing resident since 1951 and formerly of Latvia and Germany. He was a member of Lansing Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church and was formerly employed by the City of East Lansing as Supervisor of the Water Treatment Plant, retiring in 1977. Surviving are his wife, Hilda-gard; 1 brother, John of New Jersey.

Downs, age 73, passed away June 8, 1988 at his residence. He was a retired hammerman from the Oldsmobile Forge Plant with 43 years of service, retiring in 1975.
