reception. The show will feature works by the 277 artists represented by the Holt gallery. David Thomas is a Lansing State Journal correspondent. VISUAL ARTS By David Thomas the Clinton County Arts Council. Second-place honors went to Elsie's Mary Ann Peters and St.

Johns' Milli Callihan, while third place was captured Lansing's Ann Spencer. Elsie's Florence Horn, St. Johns' Margaret Jopke, East Lansing's Jim Colando, Corunna's Beth Gall, Owosso's Jeanne Curtis and Flushing's Grace Hungerford and Sharon Burris took honorable mention. A retrospective exhibit of Lansing-born artist Leo R. Weeks (1903-1977) opens Sept.

2 at the Arts Council Gallery in Traverse City. Weeks studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and with Chicago portrait painter Glen G. Sheffer. Best known for his landscapes, portraits and still lifes in oils and wa-tercolors, he also restored the Japanese murals at the Japanese Tea Gardens in Chicago's Jack I've always considered the area's Frank Lloyd Wright homes, the Charles Pollock mural at the entrance to the Michigan State University Auditorium and the Margot Evans tapestry at the East Lansing Public Library as the ultimate in mid-Michigan's art heritage. Now, I've added another addition to my list Tuesday, docents Lucille Pa-triarche and Edith Newman showed me the Paul Honore (1885-1956) murals at Peoples Church.

I knew of the Honore works at the Dearborn Public Library, the Capitol Building and the Midland County Courthouse. I honestly was not aware examples of the famous Detroit-educat-v ed artist existed in East Landing. The four murals, photo- graphs of other Honore works and the artist's book illustrations are part of the current exhibit at the downtown East Lansing church. Born in Pennsylvania, Honore was known for his mu-'rals and his colorful woodcuts. His education included time at 'Detroit's Cass Technical High School and the Detroit School of Fine Arts.

If you go to see the Honore murals, take a few minutes and look at the rest of the Peoples Church excellent art collection. Works range from an old Al-brecht Durer woodcut to contemporary pieces by such local artists as Doug DeLind, Diane Wolter, Allen Leepa and Margaret YuilL The exhibit continues through Sept. 24 and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 2 p.m.
