The Silverdome, among nine U.S. venues selected for the international championship, will make soccer history as the first indoor stadium to host World Cup play. Pontiac officials are wary of the violence that has marred major soccer events in Europe in recent years. Silverdome officials said they would consider banning the sale of alcohol before matches to minimize violence.

ELSEWHERE Lakers lose center Perkins to injury INGLEWOOD, Calif. The injury-riddled Los Angeles Lakers lost another key player Thursday when Sam Perkins went on the injury list Perkins, a center-forward, hurt his shoulder during a 98-93 loss to Portland on March 18 and didn't play against Minnesota two nights later. Perkins, who missed three games earlier this season because of a bruised left knee, is averaging 16.5 points and 8.8 rebounds. Spurs' Robinson may have thumb surgey SAN ANTONIO David Robinson is pondering surgery to repair thumb injury, and if the San Antonio Spurs center has the operation, he could miss several weeks. For the first time in his NBA career, Robinson missed a game Wednesday night because of an injury.

The All-Star center had played in 232 consecutive games. Robinson, who is undergoing therapy on the thumb every day, told reporters he was leaning more toward having surgery to repair the ligament Defensive lineman Sims returns to football AUSTIN, Texas Kenneth Sims signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills, which could lead to return to pro football as a defensive lineman. The No. 1 pick in the 1981 draft of the New England Patriots, Sims has had problems with drugs and alcohol. Two years ago he was arrested in for cocaine possession and has spent a month in drug rehabilitation.

With Texas, Sims was named an All-America defensive lineman in 1980 and 1981. In 1981, he won the Lombardi Award as the nation's top collegiate lineman. He played eight seasons with the Patriots. Calumet Farm bought for $17 million LEXINGTON, Ky. GREATER LANSING Athletic club holding basketball camps The Michigan Athletic Club will hold two one-wrck basketball camps for bovs and girls ages 7-14. The first session runs March 30-April 3, the second April 6-10. Mott Community College coach Steve Schmidt will direct the camp. Schmidt played for Waverly High School, Central Michigan University and the Washington Generals before taking the coaching position at Mott.
