Locust Grove, VA Polly Clingerman, author of eleven cookbooks, including the best-selling, award-winning KITCHEN COMPANION, died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at the age of 68. She was a consultant to the recent revision of JOY OF COOKING. More than one million copies of her books are in print. Her web site is doing well, and reactions to her books on the site are uniformly enthusiastic.

Mrs. Clingerman was also a familiar television personality on QVC and the Home Shopping networks. Mrs. Clingerman was born to the Rev. Cornelius and Clarice Mullen-burg on February 27, 1932 in Lansing, MI.

She earned a B.A. with honors in English Literature from Michigan State University and an Associate Degree in African Affairs from the Sorbonne University in Paris. She married Ambassador John R. Clingerman in 1952. After joining her Army officer husband in Germany, she later accompanied him in the Foreign Service to Nepal, the Belgian Congo, Dahomey, France, Belgium, Zambia and Lesotho.

Following her husband's retirement in 1987, Mrs. Clingerman pursued her writing career. She published travel and food articles in the WASHINGTON POST, VOGUE, MADEMOISELLE, STARS AND STRIPES, and THE FOREIGN SERVICE JOURNAL, culminating with the major successes of her cookbooks. Survivors include her husband, John R. Clingerman of Locust Grove, VA; and three nieces, Janet Kleigel of Lindsay, CA, Marilyn Griffiths of Bridgman, MI and Gail Levy of Baltimore, MD.

On her husband's side she leaves Edgar Clingerman and Marion Shotwell of Jackson, Ml, Ethel Donn and Ann Lauterback of Lansing, MI. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 21 at the Lake of the Woods Church in Locust Grove, VA, with Rev. Tom Schafer officiating. The family will receive friends at the home after the service.

Mr. Claflin was born April 19, 1940 in Charlotte, MI the son of Rex and Hazel (Clever) Claflin. A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at First Congregational Church with Rev. Dr.

Peter R.K. Brenner officiating. If desired, CONLEY, LARRY J. Perry, Ml Age 53, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 13, 2000. He was born August 27, 1946, in Lansing, MI, a son of Lewis and Margaret (Hoke) Conley.

Mr. Conley was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the honor of Eagle Scout. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam, and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Combat Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 269 in Haslett.

He was also an avid sportsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing along with Spartan athletics. Mr. Conley was employed by CCS. Microage as an Electronics Technician for almost 16 years. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Joann Conley of Perry, 2 sons, Orion and Shawn Conley, both of Perry; mother, Margaret Conley of Lansing; 2 brothers, Denton (Karen) Conley of Holt and Ronald (Jane) Conley of Midland, MI; 2 sisters, Cynthia Conley of Holt and Linda (John) Underwood of Hastings, MI; and numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Conley in 1999. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Michael L. Dunkelberger at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 17, 2000, at the Estes-Leadley HoltDelhi Chapel.

Military honors will be provided by Edwin J. Leyanna Post 671, V.F.W. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory of Larry Conley, to the American Legion Post 269 in Haslett. LOUGHRIN, DR.

HARRY JOSEPH Holland, Ml Age 73, passed away at his home in Holland on Monday, August 14, 2000. Born in Cadillac on October 30, 1926, he was the son of Leola and Charles Loughrin. Celebrating his life are his wife, Genanne; sons, Timothy, Christopher, and Matthew and their families; and his sister, Virginia Patterson. Dr. Loughrin practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Lansing for 23 years and was Professor at Michigan State University School of Medicine.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 18, at 1 p.m. at Christ Community Church, 225 E. Exchange (M-104), Spring Lake, MI 49456. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Community Church of Spring Lake; the University of Michigan Medical School; or Hospice of Holland. ROSENAU, F. GLENN Higgins Lake Formerly of Okemos and Lansing Died August 11, 2000, at age 85 after suffering a sudden massive stroke. Born in Detroit on Decem-b 2 0, 1914, he attended MSU (before it was MSU and was a big fan) and was captain of the swimming team. He worked at Vickers Corp. in Detroit prior to relocating to Lansing in 1952 to become Parts and Service Manager of the new Bill Burgess Ford.

In 1963 he became Vice President and General Manager of Curtis Ford Truck, the first exclusive Ford truck dealership. Glenn retired as President and General Manager in 1980. Glenn was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks Lodge and transferred his membership to the Houghton Lake Chapter. After retirement, he and his wife Pat relocated to Higgins Lake where they had a residence since 1954. In his later years, playing Bridge and other card games, as well as attending cultural events, became the highlight of his daily routine.

He loved life to the end and will be fondly remembered. Glenn is survived by his son, Richard (Pauletta) of Okemos; granddaughters, Erin Lynn Rosenau and Beth Ann Holiday (Don Sarver); great-grandson, Sam Sarver; brother, Arthur Rosenau; sister, Betty (Gordon) Smith; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Sorenson Funeral Home, 1108 N. Down River Road in Grayling on Saturday, August 19 at 1 1 a.m. with graveside interment immediately following at Oakwood Cemetery at Higgins Lake.

MARRIOTT, RUTH (BROWN) Lansing July 8, 1907 -August 14, 2000 Ruth was a 1939 alumnus of Edward W. Sparrow Hospital, Lansing. She worked many years in the nursing field and retired from Sparrow Hos-jital. Preceding her in death were ler parents, Clarence and Alice Jrown; one sister, Florence Johnston; and husband, Allen Marriott. She is survived by her sisters, Oleta Sheldon of Lansing and Mildred Barnard of Denver, CO area; niece, Linda Tiedt; and nephew, Lane Johnston of Evart.

Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, August 16, at Corey FuneraTHome, Evart, with burial in East Hill Cemetery, Osseo, MI, where graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 17. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at the Funeral Home.

Brighton Ase 43, passed away August 14, 2000, at home following an extended illness. She was born August 9, 1957, in Ann Arbor, a daughter of Wilbur and Elizabeth (Bailey) Herbst.

Her father, Wilbur, preceded her in death in 1988. Caroline was a member of St. George Lutheran Church, Brighton, and enjoyed traveling around the country. Prior to her illness, she had been employed by Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing, for 17 years. She is survived by her mother, Betty of Genoa Township; 3 brothers, Louis (Sherry) Herbst of Rawlin, WY, Roger (Cheryl) Herbst and Bill Herbst of Brighton; 2 sisters, Kathie and Norma Herbst of Brighton; 4 nieces and 7 nephews; 4 great nieces and 2 great nephews.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, 24 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Keehn Funeral Home, 706 W. Main, Brighton (810) 229-9871. Funeral services will be 11 a.m.

Guylas was a charter member of The Pan Draggers Car Club and a member of Hawg and Hack Car Club, Good Guys National Street Rod Association, Soaring Society, Academy of Model Aviation, and Free Flight Society. He was (receded in death by his parents, oseph and Mary (Vida) Guylas, and 1 sister, Mary Anne Guylas. Surviving are his wife, Joan; 1 daughter, Jody Doreen (Phil) Summersett of Tucson, AZ; 1 son, Jeffrey Scott Guylas of Frankfort, KY; 2 grandsons, Luke and Matt Summersett; 1 brother, Emery C.
