By BOB GROSS Lansing State Journal All coaches know the importance of free throws, especially in the state tournament. For Okemos High, accuracy at the foul line was the key weapon used to defeat Sexton Monday, 72-63, in the first round of the Class A district at Eastern's Don Johnson Fieldhouse. Senior point guard Rick Wright canned 11 of 12 free throws and finished the game with a career-high 13 points to give Okemos a giant lift The Chieftains were 25-for-30 in the game. They had just three field goals in a 19-9 fourth quarter run, but made 13 of 16 free throws. Curt Hinderliter's 24 points and 18 from Brad Huguely led Okemos.

"They were all important, believe me, especially down the stretch," Okemos Coach Stan Stolz said. "Rick not only did a great job running the offense, but he made those free throws, too." Okemos (11-7) returns to action at 6:30 p.m. today, facing St. Johns (17-3) in a semifinal game. The second game pits East Lansing (12-8) against Eastern (15-6).

Eastern rolled past Holt Monday, 95-64. St. Johns and East Lansing drew first-round byes. St. Johns, Mid-Michigan League champion and ranked honorable men tion in the Associated Press poll, lost 62-51 to Okemos on Feb.

13. Eastern has beaten East Lansing twice in Capital Area Conference games. Melvin Walker's 20 points and 19 by Berry Gessel sparked Eastern over Holt Monday. Capital Circuit champion Mason (13-7) begins its quest for a Class title tonight at Stockbridge. The Bulldogs play Jackson Lumen Christi at 7:30 p.m.

Williamston (17-4), which beat Dansville Monday in a Classic opener, returns to its own court aS 7 p.m. tonight to play Springport (1335). Also in Class Pewamo-Westphalia (19-1) faces Fulton (3-18) at 7 p.m. at Bath. Potterville (16-5) and Fowler (14-6) are in action in Class districts.

Potterville hosts Morrice (3-17) at 7 p.m. and Fowler takes on Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart (18-3) at 7:30 p.m. at Vestaburg. Wright Sports St. ODD If Leslie falls in Class to S4 Lansing State Journal BATTLE CREEK By half-time, the only question was who would end up with more points Charlotte's Eric Menk or Battle Creek Lakeview.

Menk, a junior forward, finished with 45 points as the Charlotte High School boys' basketball team defeated Lakeview, 94-71, in a Class A district game at Battle Creek Central High's gymnasium. Charlotte (11-9) will advance to the semifinals against Waverly at 8 p.m. Thursday. Menk scored 28 points in the first half. Lakeview (15-6) had 26 points.

For the game, Menk made 15-of-17 shots from the field and 15-of-18 free throws. "They were getting me the ball and it was a fast-paced game," Menk said. "Most my shots were lay-ins. That's why I shot so well." Charlotte took a 26-13 lead after the first quarter. Menk had 11 points and teammate Travis Raw-son scored nine of his 16 points.

Senior forward David Haynes led Leslie with eight points, enabling the Blackhawks to pull within three of East Jackson at the close of the third quarter. East Jackson secured the victory by sinking 13 free throws in the final quarter of play. Dan King scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for East Jackson (10-11).

Leslie ends the year 3-18. East Jackson will play for the Class championship at 7 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Wednesday's 7 Springport and Williamston match. Woolcock scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Donnie Lofgren added 12 points for the Panthers (14-7). The game was tied 24-24 at half-time, but Western pulled ahead to lead 41-40 going into the final quarter. Troy Ginzer scored 24 points and Derek Wirebaugh had 15 points to lead Western, which will play Eaton Rapids (4-14) at 7:30 p.m.

Bath steals district win from Laingsburg Alma rolls, 88-44 Lansing State Journal BATH Dale Clark scored 19 points and had 10 steals to lead Bath to a 71-57 win over Laingsburg in the Class boys' basketball district tournament Tuesday. Clark scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to boost Bath (12-9), which trailed 45-44 after three quarters. John Risch hit four of five attempted 3-point goals for 16 points. Tony Koenig added 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Chad Top performers Eric Menk, Charlotte, 45 points. Kurt Brown, Laingsburg, 26 points.

After Darell Robinson's 3-point basket gave Jackson its biggest lead, 26-18, with 6:48 left before halftime, Waverly started a torrid shooting streak. The Warriors made six of its next seven shots. Maroweili, who had a team-high 11 rebounds, scored six points in a 9-0 spurt that gave Waverly back the lead, 27-26 with 4:15 left Waverly has been a team of streaks all season. The Warriors won their first nine games, then lost six of their next seven. They have won their last five games.

Lansing State Journal Five area high school divers qualified tor state competition in boys regional meets Tuesday. Everett's Brent Kyriakou placed seventh in the Class A meet, with a score of 341.45. Kyriakou, who finished 18th in the state last year, was the only Lansing area qualifer from the competition held in East Kentwood.

All four area divers who trav- eled to Zeeland for the Class meet advanced to state as Mason will send seniors Coe Emens, Troy Laws and Tom; Feiten. Laws finished fourth with a 319.90 score, Feiten 10th with a 291.70 and Emenst was 11th at 285.35. Second-year qualifier T.J.l! Asletyne will represent DeWitCl.
