Business Lansing State Journal Monday, Nov. 14, 1988 10B in 'f- Draft beer in a bottle puts head on flat sales Hospitals find gold im catering parties. Sales still are small when compared with the top-selling beers in the country. But the success of Genuine Draft has led Adolph Coors Co. to revamp its strategy and market its premium and super-premium beers as draft products.

"We think packaged draft could be the emerging growth category of the 1980s into the 1990s," said Ralph Kytan, Genunine Draft brand manager. By next spring, the company expects to have spent more than $80 million in equipping its breweries for Genuine Draft production. Draft beer, which is not pasteurized, and the concept of selling it in bottles and cans is not new. Analysts say companies attempted to sell packaged draft beer in the 1960s and 1970s but they did not give it the same push as now, largely because the market was growing and there was less pressure to sell new products. Associated Press MILWAUKEE Miller Brewing which revolutionized the industry with the success of its low-calorie beer, is reshaping the market again with its hot-selling bottled draft beer.

And industry observers say packaged draft sales should continue climbing as companies search for ways to snatch portions of a stagnant beer market. "They (Miller) know how to experiment, and I think it becomes more important as the market goes sideways," said Robert Weinberg, a former Anheuser-Busch Inc. executive who now heads a St. Louis-based brewing industry research firm. Miller, owned by Philip Morris Companies introduced Genuine Draft in 1 986 and sold about 1 .4 million barrels that year.

Sales nearly doubled last year, and company officials say there could be 50 percent growth in 1988. By NICK LICO Associated Press DETROIT Hospital food, long considered in the mediocre classthat includes airline and school cafeteria fare, is having a coming out party. Make that going out, as in catering. Although the practice is still uncommon, hospitals are catering weddings, picnics, graduation parties. "People are going to want to be sick to come to Bi-County," said Wally Wozniak, assistant director of Food and Services of Bi-County Hospital in the Detroit suburb of Warren.

"We serve different types of chicken, such as champagne chicken, or chicken cacciatore. You can have quiche every day if you want," Wozniak said. Five Seattle-area hospitals offer espresso and cappuccino on site. A Bloomington, hospital has done so well with its bakery that restaurants purchase cookies and cakes from them. Hospitals in California, Oregon and Illinois plan similar operations, said Jan Shulman of the American Hospital Association in Chicago.

Apparently, even the experts are impressed with hospital food. Northern Duchess Hospital in Rhynebeck, New York, catered a staff picnic for the Culinary Institute of America, among the country's most prestigious schools for chefs, Shulman said. Sue Smith said she initially had not considered catering her wedding from Bi-County Hospital, where she works, but was impressed with the quality and price. That sentiment was echoed by another newlywed. "The food was excellent.

People were asking where it (had come) from," said Elaine Havern, whose previous caterer canceled seven weeks before the wedding. Jim McKenna, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of New York, took over the Bi-County kitchen last March. He previously had been a training chef for the Mountain Jack restaurant chain and for the Ponchartrain Hotel in Detroit. "Hospitals are trying to create an environment where someone can choose one hospital over another," she said. "They want to make the experience a pleasant one." 35th ANNIVERSARY Associated Press Jim McKenna (left), a graduate of the Culinary Institute of New York, and Wally Wozniak, assistant director of Food and Services at Bi-County Community Hospital, show off hospital fare, including vegetable lasagna, orange roughy and a deep-dish apple torte.

A tiny company is planning to conduct the first private-sector rocket launch Thursday. The firm E-Prime Aerospace Corp. is expected to ignite its 10-foot LOFT-1 rocket at 7:30 a.m. EST from Launch Complex 47 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, company spokesman Jim Mizell said.

"We've completed all the wickets and we have a 'go for launch," he said. "This really will be the first rocket that's totally commercially owned to fly out of the cape." President Reagan cleared the way for private-sector launches in August 1986 when he barred commercial and foreign payloads from the space shuttle's cargo bay. The new policy, which allows commercial companies to launch rockets from government facilities, was designed to spur the creation of a launch industry in the United States. The LOFT-1 rocket will carry a 30-pound payload containing four experiments. Included are: II One to study effects of acceleration and low gravity on advance aerospace materials Wfeea-ISwa Sjpke "Op Ym samples.

A package of collection and telemetry systems with radio beacons and flotation devices that will enable the rocket to be located and recovered. An experimental system to measure and record the rocket's performance. A biology experiment by -Brookwood High School in Snell-ville, to test the effects of solar radiation and acceleration on vegetable-seed germination. The rocket is to shoot up 20,000 feet, then drop its payload by parachute into the ocean for recovery. It will be in the air for 15 minutes.

E-Prime, based in Titusville, will pay the Air Force $24,400 for use of a launch pad and minimal support crew for two launches. lC I if NU hi r.miiiMiiiir.
