Saranac: The Redskins figure to be right on the heels of Carson City as three starters return.

Martha Smith, a first-team all-league pick last year, should often dominate inside with her 6-1 frame. Barb Snay is another top notch performer. The 5-9 senior forward, was an honorable mention pick for all-league honors last year. Kim Sweet, a 5-4 junior guard is the third starter back from last season's 14-4 crew. Seniors Monte Hayden, a 5-7 forward and Lisa Eddy, a 5-5 guard, complete the starting lineup for Coach Patrice Mason.

Maple Valley: Melissa Coffman, a 5-9 sen-, ior guard and a first-team all-leaguer in 1980, is one of two returning starters. The other, Melanie Rogers, also measures 5-9. She's a forward. The Lions, 12-10 a-year ago, figure to start Tammi Teachworth, a 5-8 senior, in the middle. Senior Paula Service and junior Colleen Hoffman should complete the starting cast.

Portland: The Red Raiders have just three letter, winners back from the 8-14 club of a year ago. Senior Laurie Thomas and junior Judy Thompson will be counted on at the forward spots, while the third returnee, Patty Marks, is the likely starter in the middle. Coach Jon Snellenberger has high hopes for Debbie Hall, a 5-8 senior forward is the lone returning letter winner from last season's 10-10 club (8-2 in the league). She averaged 14.0 in scoring in 1980. Junior Trisha Goodell and sophomore Kim Wil-key are the leading candidates for the guards.

Junior Sue Van Sickler and sophomore Rae Fredenburg will likely join Hall up front. Donna Schultz, a 5-5 guard-forward, should be the top player off Borchard's bench. Howell: The Highlanders return three starters from last season's 12-8 squad, including both guards. Seniors Kathy Gerkin and Lynn Langenderfer form a steady duo in the back court. Also back is 5-11 senior center Kim Wagoner, to handle the bulk of the rebounding duties.

Julie Shaffer and Jenne' Hickman are expected to start at the forward positions, while Nikki Dugger should contribute off the Highlander bench. Lakewood: The outlook for improving on last season's 14-7 mark appears likely as Coach Ron Coppess welcomes back five letter winners, headed ty Dee Westendorp, a 5-11 junior forward who broke single-season school records for most points and rebounds in 1980. Junior guard Kristi Seese Jias good size (5-8) and can also score. She started last year and wound up with 220 points in the 21 games. OF D. (Dow ling Hall) Detroit M.S.U. EDUCATIONAL CENTER Troy CONCORDIA COLLEGE Ann Arbor i university inn Cast Lansing DETROIT COLLEGE OT Business Dearborn Of flint SAMT1LL1 EDUCATIONAL PLAZA Mt. Clemens By TIM JEFFERY Journal Correspondent Most coaches in the Mid-State Athletic Conference agree Ashley High School's girls' basketball team is a notch above the rest, with several top players from the Class finalists of a year ago returning. The same can't be said about the Tri-Central Athletic Association, however, as Carson City, Lakeview, Saranac and Maple Valley are all strong bets to finish with winning seasons.

Two other area schools. Howell and Lakewood Lake Odessa, are also looking for successful years, with Lakewood standing a good chance to top last year's mark of 14 victories. The following is a look into the area's teams from the MSAC and the TCAA as well as Howell and Lakewood. Ashley: After a 23-3 mark and a trip to the state championship game in 1980, the Bears are entitled to a letdown, but Coach Carl Wayer has 20 wins in mind once again. Four key players from last year's runner-up in Class are back, headed by 5-foot-7 senior guard Denise Paksi, an all-league pick last season.

She's joined by returning forwards Lori Crumbaugh and Michelle Haruska and 5-8 senior center Tammy Howes. A fifth letter winner, Teri Bradley, plus sophomore guards Jill and Joan Wicke give the Bears added punch. Wayer also has a foreign-exchange student, 5-8 Anja Sames, who figures to contribute. Morrice: The Orioles managed just two wins in the Mid-State Conference last year, but outside the loop Zel Seidenberg's team posted a 6-4 mark. The starting lineup will feature four returning letterwinners, including three seniors.

The top player, however, is a junior, guard Kelly Bolek, an honorable mention choice on the all-league team in 1980. She's joined by 5-4 Betty Jo Mortimore in the backcourt. Up front, the Orioles look to 5-10 center Lisa Grinberg and 5-9 forward Karen Bishop to make them contenders. Ginger Steele, a 5-6 junior guard and Brenda Walker, 5-7 junior forward, also figure prominently in Seidenberg's plans. Brenda Smith, a 5-8 junior was the team's top rebounder a year ago and was chosen on the all-league honorable mention list. Shiela O'Grady, also 5-8, is the other forward. Johns banks on Pearsall N1 1 Si sophomore in 1980 and Coach Beth Swears says 7 Zo7o utts nign-rower Aivirivi xereo neceiver STA-2080 by Realistic I m. 0 Ik ill By Tim Jeffery Journal Correspondent Mid-Michigan Conference's premier girls' basketball player for the past three seasons is busy readying herself for her first year at Eastern Michigan University, but now, a junior forward at St. Johns High School is being talked of in the same manner as Ovid-Elsie's Jennifer Litomi-sky was during her three-year reign as an all-stater. Litomiskv never led the Marauders to a leaeue title, however, and it remains to be seen whether Sue Pearsall can key the Redwings toward a successful defense of the. 1980 conference championship, especially with four starters gone from the team that coasted to a 16-0 regular season record.

Ionia and Corunna have been tabbed the early favorites while St. Johns and O-E appear to have lost too much to graduation to repeat as the conference's top two teams. Debbie Hufnagel, 5-11 14 senior, should help with the rebounding load as will 5-10 senior Gretchen Banninga. The starting guards are seniors as well, 5-6 Patti Smith and 5-5 Sue Howe. Juniors up from the JV team expected to contribute include Lisa Mazzolini and Lisa Smith. Alma: Coach Ray Van DeWeghe says he faces a rebuilding task for the first time in many years, after posting a fine 16-6 mark last season.

Only two senior letter winners, Kay McDade and Chris Welch, are on hand, thus the starting lineup could include a pair of sophomores. McDade will start at forward. She'll be joined by 5-6 junior Phyllis Majors. Judy Hudecz, at 5-8, is the leading candidate for the center spot. Fellow sophomore, Shelly Frost, may be a starter at guard.

The Panthers should also get help from Welch and junior Kristy Dils-worth in the backcourt. Ovid-Elsie: Mary Hudecek may at times wish she could turn back the for no longer can she be certain of the 25 points and 20 rebounds Litomisky produced on a regular basis for three seasons. Lisa Clark, a 5-9 junior will be called upon to fill the empty shoes in the pivot. Seniors Lori Len and Tena Woodbury, both 5-7 and returning letter winners from the 19-5 team of a year ago should make Clark's task a little easier. Elise O'Donnell, a 5-8 junior must also contribute up front.

The Marauders' top player is Shawn Barclay, a 5-6 junior guard, who started last year. The other guard spot will be handled by freshman Mary Perrien or junior Kim Daniel. Lisa Stencel, a 5-foot-8 senior' forward and Winona Mustang, a 5-9 senior who will see action -at both forward and center, form a solid pair up front. The role of playmaker belongs to 5-5 senior Christine Selfridge.

Coach Kay Breining has a couple of bright junior prospects in Carol LaPointe, a 5-9 center, and Julie Cope, 5-1 guard. St. Johns: O-E isn't the only team in the MMB that lost a superb center. St. Johns must replace 6-3 Lori Kus in the middle, plus -three other starters, including standout guard Denise Thelen.
